What you build should outlast you.

Wynn Collins helps families protect their retirement savings, choose the right Medicare coverage, and keep their estate out of probate. Based in Knoxville, serving families in all 50 states.

II · The pieces

A lifetime, in pieces.

The house. The 401(k) and the IRA. Medicare decisions at 65. The ring that was your grandmother's. Each piece is held a different way, and each one needs a plan.

III · Without a plan

Left alone, the pieces scatter.

Savings sit exposed to the next market drop. Gaps and cliffs hide in retirement income and coverage. And whatever isn't planned for goes through probate, a public court process that takes months.

Tennessee probate · four-month creditor period · T.C.A. § 30-2-306
IV · Positioning

Every piece, in its place.

Positioning puts each part of your retirement where it does its best work: savings protected, coverage chosen, and a clear path for what you leave behind.

V · The trust

The trust is the keystone.

An arch can't stand until its keystone is set. Then every stone holds. A living trust works the same way. It holds what you own and passes it to your family without probate.

VI · What it does

What a complete plan does.

Keeps it out of probate

What a trust holds passes to your family without a court case.

Shields savings from market drops

A fixed index annuity's value isn't reduced when the market falls.

Finds the gaps and cliffs

Income shortfalls, coverage gaps, and thresholds that quietly raise what you pay.

Fits your Medicare

Coverage chosen around your doctors, prescriptions and budget.

VII · The passage

Built for the people who come after you.

Children, grandchildren, and people you may never meet. A legacy keeps working long after the day you set it in place.

Services

One plan, four parts.

Retirement isn't one decision. Savings, income, health coverage and what you leave behind all affect each other, so Wynn works on all four together, in this order.

Retirement · Gaps and cliffs

Where retirement plans leak.

Most plans look fine on paper. The trouble hides in the transitions and thresholds. These are the ones Wynn looks for first.

  1. Gap

    The bridge to 65

Retire before 65 and you need health coverage until Medicare starts.

  2. Cliff

    The premium cliff

Medicare Part B and D premiums jump once income crosses set brackets, called IRMAA, based on your tax return from two years earlier. Going over by one dollar puts you in the higher bracket.

  3. Gap

    The early-loss risk

A market drop in the first years of retirement, while you're withdrawing, can do lasting damage to savings.

  4. Gap

    The probate gap

Without a trust, what you leave can be held up in court for months, in public.

How a fixed index annuity credits interest

Hypothetical six years with an 8% cap and a 0% floor.

You give up some upside in strong years in exchange for no losses in down years.

Hypothetical example, not actual or projected performance. Caps, participation rates and crediting methods vary by contract and can change. Money is usually committed for a surrender period of several years; withdrawals above the free amount during that period carry a surrender charge.
Medicare

Medicare, chosen with care.

Original Medicare with a supplement and a drug plan, or a Medicare Advantage plan. The right fit depends on your doctors, your prescriptions, how much you travel and your budget.

  1. Around your 65th birthday

    Initial Enrollment Period

Seven months: the three months before your birthday month, the month itself, and the three months after.

  3. January 1 – March 31

Based in Knoxville

Rooted in Tennessee, serving all 50 states.

Wynn works with families across the country from Knoxville. Every state has its own rules. For Tennessee families, these are the ones that shape a plan.

No state inheritance tax

Tennessee repealed its inheritance tax for deaths in 2016 and later, and its gift tax in 2012. Federal estate tax can still apply to very large estates.

Phased out 2012–2015 · repealed for deaths after Dec. 31, 2015

Probate is public and takes months

Creditors get four months from the published notice to file claims, so an estate can't close sooner. Property held in a funded living trust generally stays out of probate.

T.C.A. § 30-2-306

Community property trusts for married couples

Since 2010, Tennessee couples can hold assets in a community property trust. At the first spouse's death, the whole trust can receive a stepped-up tax basis, which can lower capital gains tax for the survivor.

T.C.A. § 35-17-101 et seq.

Trusts follow the Uniform Trust Code

Tennessee's trust code sets the duties trustees owe your family. Banks can confirm a trust with a short certificate of trust, so the full document stays private.

T.C.A. § 35-15-101 et seq.

Questions

Plain answers to common questions.

What is a fixed index annuity?
It's an insurance contract that credits interest based on a market index, such as the S&P 500, without investing your money in the market. When the index rises, you earn interest up to a cap or participation rate. When it falls, you're credited zero instead of a loss. Money is usually committed for a surrender period of several years, and the guarantees depend on the insurance company that issues the contract.
Can I roll my 401(k) or IRA into an annuity?
Often, yes. A 401(k) can usually be rolled over once you leave that employer, and some plans allow it earlier. A direct rollover moves the money without taxes or penalties. Whether it makes sense depends on your current fees and options, your income needs, and how long you can commit the money.
When should I sign up for Medicare?
Your Initial Enrollment Period is the seven months around your 65th birthday. If you're still working and covered by an employer plan, you may be able to delay Part B without a penalty. Missing your window without other qualifying coverage can mean a late penalty that lasts as long as you have Medicare.
Do I need a trust, or is a will enough?
It depends on what you own, who you're leaving it to, and how much you want to avoid probate. A will names who receives what and who's in charge, but it's carried out through probate. A living trust keeps funded property out of probate and covers you if you can't manage your own affairs. Many families use both: a trust at the center, with a short will as a backstop.
What does it mean to fund a trust?
Funding means moving property into the trust's name: recording a new deed for your home, retitling bank and investment accounts, and updating beneficiary forms where that fits. A trust only controls what it holds, so an unfunded trust can still leave property in probate.
Do you work with families outside Tennessee?
Yes. Wynn works with families in all 50 states. Probate, trust and insurance rules vary from state to state, and your plan is built around the rules where you live.
